Why you shouldn't use the Opera (GX) Browser

Many Youtubers, twitch streamers and other influencers are making advertisements for the Opera GX browser. But when I recently browsed the Internet, I found ads for this browser in places where you normally only get malware and stuff like that. This lightened my curiosity because why would you advertise your browser there?

They describe themselves as an Gaming oriented web-browser which gives you a lot of features on paper for free. You get an free-VPN, a free adblocker and much more. But you must remind yourself, that when you get something for free on the internet, most of the time you pay with your data. Despite this you may say, that Opera has its headquarters in Norway, and then they have to be very careful with your data? Operas headquarters may be in Norway, but they are owned by Kunlun Tech Co., a company located in China.

Opera and the CCP

The CCP made a law, which forced any company on Chinese terrain to hand out its customer data on request. You should notice the problem right here. Opera is owned by a Chinese company which has to hand out its user data to the CCP. This in fact can lead to major problems. I don't want to dig to deep into this topic, but when a ideologic country has to get your data over some interesting ways they probably do something malicious with it.

I recommend not using the Opera (GX) browser and using some trustworthy alternative, like Brave or Firefox. And when you are not focused on how your data is being used you can at least use Edge or Chrome.
