Archive Team Warrior

The Internet never forgets

This is a sentence you may heard before. It is used to cause cation when uploading something to the world wide web, because a future version of yourself could regret it.

But the recent past showed that this isn´t true. Examples are the U.S. deleting many of their .gov sites 1

This is a problem. When a country or company can decide to delete their sites and the information they contain this information then is lost, forever.

Here the Archive Team Warrior projects jumps in. There is already a large backup of internet sites, its called the wayback-machine, a part of the internet archive. On this website you can manually put in any URL and then the wayback machine is going to make a screenshot of this site in its current state. That would be a ridiculous amount of copy and pastes you would have to do if you wanted to do that manually.

The people at Archive Team Warrior made a virtual disk image which you can open in any vm software (they prefer Oracle VM Virtual Box). This Virtual Machine then lets you decide in what backup program you want to take part and after some clicks your pc then starts backing up websites automatically, neat. There is even a leader board where you can "compete" who backs up the most websites.

In this way you can help saving old internet websites and preserve it for the coming generations. Even though you only do a small part, together we achieve something much bigger.

Let´s start backing up!
